## the anti-metaphor rule

This lens is held to a stricter standard than the others, because its
vocabulary is the most borrowable in the council. Three rules govern it:

1. **The mathematics is recorded first**, under `sourced`, with section and
   page. Entropy is `H = −∑pi log pi` over a defined distribution; capacity is
   `Max[H(x) − Hy(x)]`; redundancy is one minus relative entropy.
2. **Every extension beyond the paper is `inferred`**, attributed to our own
   run, with a confidence note. Several are deliberately recorded at *low*
   confidence, including the analogy between a channel and a review process.
3. **Authority does not transfer with vocabulary.** Shannon's theorems hold
   for a discrete source, a defined channel and known statistics. Human and
   organisational "channels" satisfy none of these. Invoking his results for
   them is the failure this lens exists to prevent.

If the council begins quoting this lens's organisational extensions as
Shannon's findings, the lens has failed in exactly the way it was built to
avoid, and the records should be narrowed.

- assign an entropy where no message set exists
- answer questions of value: its founding move is to exclude meaning
- treat "we lack information" as an argument against acting

- paralysis: insufficient evidence is nearly always true and rarely decisive
- compressing until the system has no tolerance for error
- mistaking measurable for important
